Spring has Sprung; Easter and the Work Progresses!

April 14, 2014

Hi Everyone!

That's exciting that both Jake and Jonathan spoke [at Jake’s mission farewell in Church]. I bet it was pretty funny not being able to see him! It’s crazy that Jake is already leaving on his mission! I remember when I was getting ready to leave. It was one of those things you expected but when it happens its weird that it’s already here. Just like when I started my mission, after about my second or 3rd transfer I just accepted the fact that my mission would never end. It had felt like I’d been out forever at 4 months. Then I realized I had 20 more to go! And now it’s weird seeing I’m on the downhill, never thought I would be at this point!

As of now we don't have any plans for Easter, although I’m sure a member will feed us, ever since Elder Thackeray left we have been fed almost every day! We might go over to the Young’s house, a family in the ward with Ryan who is 15 and Meghan who is 17, and they live in a guarded community... you have to give your I.D phone number license plate number and where you are going! They have a full gym in their house, and I don't know what else! Should be cool!

We are getting close to having Sharri baptized. She is really excited about it, and her less active husband has started coming as well! She is on date for the 3rd of May. Also we are working with a former member, whose 8 year old daughter wants to be baptized. She is really smart! She reads better that the majority of adults out here. And that's not an exaggeration! They both were at church on Sunday and the whole ward was friendly and excited to see her, which is good because she was embarrassed to come to church after so long. Also we started to meet with a family who is less active because he travels the country. He was supposed to give a talk the last 3 weeks but people always talk to long, so he doesn't have time. People here can talk! It’s ridiculous, but we met with their daughter who is in her 20's and have begun teaching her and she came to church as well! Things are going well!

And from what I remember of Spanish when I trained the missionary going to Argentina, we plan on watching the restoration in Spanish and then saying "Bautizmo?" Meaning “baptism?” and see what he says, or try to know what he says!

Also, I did get the journal of Discourses! Thank you! I have been reading them. They have some cool things in there!

And I haven't gone to get glasses yet, I didn't have money on my card for the co-pay but I should be able to now. I will probably do that today.

And Spring is here! The trees are starting to bloom, and its getting green! Yesterday was actually 78 degrees! Although its cooling down again into the high 50's and low 60's. I’m excited! We noticed the sun make a huge difference in our attitudes and others. I am so much happier and have more energy, although the humidity is definitely beginning, It’s terrible! 70 degrees feels like 80, but you just feel wet and sticky. Oh well, it’s better than the winter this year where it was 10 below a couple times and having 8 inches of snow and 20 inches once! This is much more tolerable!

And with my watch, I’d love to have it again, but if you think it’s best to leave it at home until I get back that works for me! Also if that's the case would you all be able to help me out with buying another one out here? Nothing expensive just a replacement that looks nice from Walmart?

Anyway that's about it!

Love you all!
Elder Latimer

April 21, 2014

Hi Everyone!

Things here are going good. Spring is here and the trees are starting to get green again! The say WV is beautiful, but in the winter it’s so ugly! Everything is dead, not like home where it’s always green!

And Easter was interesting. We went and ate with 2 older ladies who signed up before anyone else could get the chance. The house was full of cats and dogs that ran wild, and so my allergies were through the roof. It was miserable. Not to mention that she did a meal where it was all symbolic. First, we dipped parsley into salt water and ate it. Then we put horseradish on a dandelion and ate it. Then we ate this weird bread soup thing. Then some lamb.... It was terrible and I didn’t get even close to full!! Oh well, at least they fed us. And then we went home, showered, ate a little more and visited another less-active member who, of course, had cats as well. It was a day full of a runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing every couple minutes, and a raw nose! Church was good though cause there weren’t cats there! We had 2 people come to church.  The former member and her daughter and a less-active family and their non-member daughter, Courtney, who has come to church twice now! They are an awesome family who is less-active because he travels the country regularly. I don’t remember what his rank is but he is in the military and another member of the ward who is in the Army told us that less that 3% of the people that join the army make it there. So he is a kinda a big deal, haha! They are AWESOME and every time we come over they load us up with food! We were talking to his daughter last night, and he says jokingly, “If your boyfriend (who is in the Army) doesn’t join the church, he won’t be accepted into this family. She responded, "yeah well we will just move to Texas or Missouri" and he responds, "unless he gets sent to Korea! And you know I can do that!" It was really funny! He is very straight forward with her. It’s awesome.  He is kinda sarcastic with her but not really haha. He told us in front of her, "well you can count Courtney out of coming to church, she is kinda a lost cause." He is great, and they are a fun family we enjoy going over there. Oh, and he also made her agree to cook for us! So we are loving it!

Other than that we are still working with a few investigators. Sherry just needs to quit smoking and Misty needs to keep progressing. We are going to see Derek this week - the black man we met who asked us where our church is, and then asked for a copy of the Book of Mormon and then said to come back in a few weeks and he will have it read!

The bed bugs are slowly going away. We have another treatment this week and that should do it!

I haven’t got the package yet. Did you send it to the Mankin Avenue or Arnold Avenue address? Because the new address is Mankin Avenue, but I can check the old place after this!

And I will be sure to e-mail Jake!

Love,

Elder Latimer

P.S
Can you talk to grandpa about selling me a gun or two when I get back!

April 28, 2014

Hi Everyone!

Things here are good. The trees are starting to be green and the weather is warming up, which is nice at the moment, but once summer rolls around it kinda sucks! Better than this last winter with days of -10 degrees! Anyway, speaking of summer, I need some new short sleeve shirts, 2 out of the 3 I have now ripped in the back so I only have one! Thank goodness we have a washer and dryer so I can at least wash it in water every night, so I can wear a non-sweat covered shirt the next day!

Oh and about the pictures, I still can’t find that card! It had a ton of pictures, including the ones with me and the pirates! :( So I’m working on taking some more pictures so I can send you this card. Oh, and I’m wondering if there is a way I could get a new camera? This one is beat to pieces. The cover to where the battery goes won’t shut so the battery always falls out and I have to hold it shut to take pictures.  And something with the lens fell off and so now the camera won’t really focus. Let me know how to go about doing that!

We taught Courtney the other night with their family who fed us some BBQ ribs. It’s nice when the sun comes out. EVERYONE here grills! Anyway the lesson went swell, and she was really excited about it and came to church the next day for the 3rd time! Oh and I remembered what rank her dad is in the army.  It is Command Sargeant Major, I believe. Anyway we also finally just found the address to the Kincaids (the investigators in our area that the sisters have been teaching) and because they were being slow with the transition we decided to take the initiative, and it went great! They are awesome.

I am wondering how I need to go about getting more prescription headache medicine. I only have one left, and I don’t want to be out when another comes!

I’m thinking I will be leaving this transfer because during interviews President Pitt told Elder Morgan this is where he will finish his mission, and asked if he has any missionaries he wants to serve with. So I’m guessing I will be getting transferred, which is nice because I’m kinda burnt out on Beckley.  It’s too big! There is too much going on. I enjoyed Pennsboro where it was nice a quiet and slow paced! But we will see.

Oh and I did end up getting the package! THANKS!

Love you all,

THE Elder Latimer

Bedbugs and Springtime!

March 10, 2014

Hi Everyone!

It seems that Spring is on the way here for us too, I hope! Although the next 2 days will be in the 60's then Thursday the high is 24, but then it got back up to mid 50's. I’m tired of the cold and wet!

That's crazy that they prescribed mom morphine! If she was out here she could get some good money for it! They love their prescription medication and meth out here. Where we are now we see a drug deal about every day, but it’s still not as bad as what I’ve seen back home believe it or not!

That's crazy Jonathan is a deacon now! It seems like he is younger than that! I’ve never played Whirley ball. I’ve heard of it, but never played! I remember when I got my first phone I was pretty excited! It’ll be nice to have my own phone when I get home again. Well just to be by myself will be the greatest thing ever! Sometimes I tell my companion I have to poop when I don't, so I can just sit in the bathroom for 20 minutes by myself.

And I’ll be sure to send Jake an e-mail! He may have some questions for you when I get done. Don't worry it’ll be funny :)

Nothing new is going on, except trying to stay busy. My companion loves to drop investigators that aren’t immediately ready for baptism. I don't think he quite understands that in this mission, you are very rarely going to have a "Good" investigator. It doesn't help him that he got completely burned by a pastor the other day. We went with a member and both the member and I saw where the pastor was going with what he was saying. But we let him set my companion up so he could learn. Essentially he got to the point about what makes Joseph Smith a prophet and not him. My companion told him that Joseph was called of God, to which the pastor said, "So you’re telling me, that what I’ve done for the last 30 years wasn't for God?" And he responded, “yes.” So we were lucky he was a good understanding guy and did it to teach him that he can’t just completely demean someone because they aren’t Mormon and that he needs to be more humble instead of tear everyone down because they aren’t of our faith. It was great. Then the member gave him a hard time too. It was nice because then I didn't have to be the one arguing with him. So I told him one thing I learned is people aren’t going to talk to you about the church or anything around this area of the country until they trust you. You have to become their friend before you even say anything about the Church, or you will make them want to leave. He still doesn't quite understand it. When I see the most success is when I’m serving with someone like me who like to just get to know them and wait to teach until the time is right and we develop a friendship because then they genuinely know you care about them. You’re not just a robot that only wants to talk about Joseph Smith.

And I’ve learned people don't want to learn about Joseph Smith. The way to go about things is talk about Jesus and His importance and reference Joseph Smith, but don't make it the subject. We are in bible country and once you focus on Joseph Smith and not Jesus they immediately are turned off!

Anyway that’s about all that’s going on now. We are moving this Saturday so that’s exciting! I’ll have to make a quote book for one of the less active members I’ll send you... it’s great. I will send the package soon, I just need to grab the pirate CD from the investigator in my last area today and I’ll send it!

Love you all!
Elder Latimer

March 17, 2014

Hi Everyone!

Well it’s still snowing here! I thought it was going to get warmer and now it’s in the 30's and ice. I’m so ready for the warm! Oh well.

That’s cool Jake finally got to go through the temple! Did he ask you about dropping the trumpet? I figured I would shoot him an e-mail :)

The investigators here are good.  We are still working with Sharri and have to move her date back because she didn’t make it to church last Sunday, but she is great and will make it I’m sure! We have begun to teach another African man from Ghana. I love teaching them because they are so open and willing to learn. One thing I have learned is that they have a lot of dreams, almost like vision dreams. Every one I have taught has told me about dreams and visions they have, and so have other missionaries. I don’t know why but it’s pretty cool. Just like in Pennsboro when we taught Jay, he told us about dreams and visions he had all the time! It is the same with Richard Yeboah, the new guy we are teaching. Although his dreams were more of a nightmare so we will have to work on that!

We did move into our new place and it’s so much better! I haven’t seen a drug deal yet! We have an upstairs, downstairs, 2 kitchens and 2 washers and dryers and just got a new couch today.  We are getting another couch and a love seat this week, and we got a ping pong table Saturday! So it’s a pretty cool place! I’m hoping they put another set of elders there as that make everything more fun!

There is a family we visit, Dwayne and Tyler. They are pretty cool. Dwayne is the dad and Tyler is the son.  He is about 19 and reminds me of Jake! He loves wrestling and likes to fart on his girlfriend too. They are a lot of fun and like to discuss doctrine quite a bit! It’s nice to have a family to visit who doesn’t put up some fake front that they are this perfect little family and watches what they say around you. One of those families that makes you feel like a normal person!

That’s crazy you all are in Washington, DC. That’s not very far! I can see why Jake wants to visit Brooklyn. It could be cool to visit those places where rappers grew up... although if it’s in the same neighborhood I doubt it’s very safe! Especially if your white and driving a nice car!

I’m assuming you all heard about the 2 buildings in Harlem that blew up and the missing plane from Malaysia? Crazy stuff.

It is frustrating to hear about Walter Thurmond and Browner leaving, and Red and Clemons! I really liked them all. Oh well, I’m sure Pete knows what he is doing. As long as we take the Lombardi again next year! At least we still have Percy, Marshawn, Sherman, Kam and Earl!

Transfers are on the 27th so I’m almost done with this transfer thank goodness! It will start warming up then. I have a feeling I will train this upcoming transfer, but I hope not.  I like being a normal missionary, but we will see!

Just to let you know, I don’t know how or why but this last transfer I’ve been getting hives. They sent me to the doc to get checked up, and they gave me a steroid shot, and I need to pick up some prescriptions from them that are $30, so I’ll have to do that sometime soon before they come back for some reason or another.

Anyway that’s about it!

Love you all!
Elder Latimer

March 25, 2014

Hi Everyone!

So good news is that I am getting a new companion, and I’m staying in Beckley. I will be serving with an Elder Morgan who I’ve met once or twice. He seems like a good guy. I don’t know if he is into sports or not. I do know he isn’t fat or anything though, and from what I’ve been told that he is kind of a pretty boy. But that’s all right I think it would be hard for it to be worse than it was. It’s awesome too because the area is really picking up.

Savannah who we met last week and her family who want to learn are great! Savannah has already ready all the way through Alma, and she said she will have it finished by tomorrow night when we see her! She has already begun to quit smoking. She is at 1/2 a cigarette a day.

Then there is Sharri who had just had gall bladder surgery, so we didn’t see her last week and she didn’t make it to church, but she is the one who we talked to who said she felt like the temple was pulling her in. The member who is good friends with her has already started to make plans to go to the temple with her after a year of her baptism, talk about a great member fellow shipper!

Then there is Misty who is struggling with depression and an illness and is afraid to leave her kids. She really thinks she is going to die from it. The doctors who did surgery on her left a piece of plastic in her after and the bacteria caused problems and she was hospitalized for 4 years, and all her kids know is that she is sick. So it’s hard for her. We offered to give her a blessing, and she said she didn’t feel worthy, and we explained to her there is no one unworthy of a blessing. She still didn’t want one. So we left and when we came back she said she got a lot worse, and she thinks its God punishing her for not receiving the blessing. So she accepted the blessing the next time around. She is progressing!

Other than that not much else has been going on, just the same old stuff. Not really any really cool stories for you all this week, although we did form a group of people we call the "FDA" (False Doctrine Alliance).  It is a mixture of investigators and members who just say ridiculous things. They are composed of, Captain Alaska, Chief of Chaplains, Dr. Glory, The Watcher, Professor WV, and Peculiar Woman. They say some ridiculous stuff.  I can only think of a few, like Jesus lives in the Spirit World and ride a white horse with a rainbow mane, and the Holy Ghost is the invisible Jesus, and The Catholics assassinated Jesus and some others. I’ll have to start writing them down! People here are something else.

Oh and just wondering . .  . I’m on a knowledge pursuit.  I have downloaded all of the Journal of Discourses and want to print them out so that I can read them whenever not just once a week for a half hour. But the only thing is that it is a little over 8000 pages. I was wondering if you all would like to invest in my brain bank and help me finance the printing :) I think I can format it so that it’s around 6000 pages at least, and it’s about $50 for 1000 pages... Let me know please :)

With the glasses, when you say an allowances of $200, does that mean I can spend around that or I should look for a little cheaper pair because there is only $200?

The hives are getting better. I have to use a lot of hand sanitizer because I read what it does is lower my immune system, so whatever it is won’t affect me as much. I don’t want to get sick! I’ve never had them before. They suck! I have a bunch on the top of my feet so when I walk the shoes rub them, and they itch so bad! It’s hard to sleep at night cause it itches so bad! I have prescription cream I got too and that still doesn’t work to well. But they are getting better!

My jaw isn’t too bad, but I still can’t wait to get it fixed. The crookedness is bugging me! Is there a way I can start braces on my mission? Or do they not allow that? Is there a way that at some point I can get my birth mark removed? Or is that not really possible? Just wondering!

How does the warranty on my watch work? It’s still working and things just the rubber on the band is slowly falling off and has a few small scuffs on the face. How would I go about getting that fixed? I’m assuming the warranty convers it, and I may just have to send it to you all?

I was thinking about School and BSU or SVU. And with SVU I’m wondering if you all could possibly get in contact about the football program :) If there is a way i could walk on or be able to play there that would seal the deal! Just another reason for me to keep in shape. I think I’ve told you all, since I’ve been little my biggest dream is to play D1 ball, although SVU isn’t D1 or 2 or even 3. I don’t know but I would love to suit up again! I don’t know if there is a way you all could talk to them about that? A member told me their program for physical therapy is only a minor there. So if I do go there it may only be for a year or 2, however long it takes until I need to transfer to finish school. But I don’t know, I’m still thinking and trying to decide!

That’s about all that’s going on here. I will send my camera card and package to you all. I have a CD in there I made for Jake that has a talk or 2 on it I really liked! And of course the Christian Pirate Folk Medal CD! Along with some ties I just grabbed and tossed in because I have too many!

Love you all!
Elder Latimer

Oh and how is march madness going?\
NFL Free agency and UW Football?

Love you!

March 31, 2014

Hi Everyone!

Things are going well here, Elder Morgan (my new companion) is great and not from Utah! He is from Anaheim, California. We get along well and should have some fun this transfer! This past week was rough though because we only had about 30 miles left for 5 days until we get more. So we walked a lot in the rain and snow! It was miserable and hard to get work done. But now that’s over, and we have about 10 more miles for today and we get more! It’s nice cause today is sunny and supposed to be around the 60's and up to the 70’s later in the week. Spring is here finally after 2 inches of snow on Sunday!

Savannah, Misty, and Sharri are doing well. We couldn’t see them last week because of miles, but we should be able to see them all this week! We just started teaching Richard Yeboah again. He is from Ghana. We had a great lesson with him where he asked great questions and had concerns resolved. He told us: “I don’t care who is right, I just want to know who is right so I can do it!" So we committed him to read and he has. He also wants us to come back Tuesday to meet his fiancĂ© who is moving in with him from France! So I think its progress that he wants us to come to talk to her!

We also have a referral we are contacting today that sounds promising! It is someone the sisters who are in our ward met, and surprisingly gave him to us. We have had a problem lately with the sisters poaching. Their top investigator (where the wife wants to get baptized) in is our area, but they won’t tell us where they live or let us teach them. Lately President Pitt has been getting strict about boundaries, and they wonder why they aren’t progressing anymore. We think it’s because we have stewardship over the people in this area! It’s actually been a mission-wide problem of sisters poaching!  It was funny we found out their top investigator was in our area when Elder Morgan got here and the next day was correlation. So Elder Morgan decided to play stupid. (The sisters think that we think that they are in their area.) When the sisters brought up the "Kincaids" and talked about their progress, Elder Morgan asked, "hmm… where does she live?" To which the sisters kind of stalled and stuttered and after about 30 seconds sheepishly said... "Beckely.”  Then they continued to make excuses why they are teaching them and not us and why they won’t turn them over to us. So we hope to keep giving them a hard time until they do what they need to!

And I can ask President Pitt about it [studying the Journal of Discourses]. I do know a lot of people who have a couple talks printed from the JoD, and I don’t plan on studying them during personal study time, but just in my free time. I have made sure to not take everything as doctrine in those. President Pitt told me one time that a way to know if it is true doctrine other than prayer, is to ponder it, and if it begins to connect dots and there are no holes in it, you can begin to assume it is true, but do not take it as doctrine until you have studied and prayed. Anyway, they would be great if you could print out a couple volumes and send them that would make it easier and cheaper. Would you be able to send all of them eventually? Maybe just a few volumes every now and then? I know I won’t be able to read through all of them on my mission, even my lifetime maybe? But it’s just that much more to choose from!

That’s cool that Jake and Jonathan are speaking at the same time! I always here about you all talking about Joe singing and how great it is, but I’ve never heard it before!

I’ve heard all about the mudslide. People here when they hear I’m from Washington all ask me if I have heard about it and ask if I had family there. Thank goodness we don’t! It sounds terrible. It’s weird to have something like that happen there. Washington seems to never have any crazy natural disasters!

That’s too bad about Brandon Browner and Walter Thurmon and Golden Tate, they were great players! At least we still have the key players like Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Russel Wilson, Marshawn and Percy Harvin! Superbowl bound!

It’s weird not knowing about March Madness. I’ve followed it for the longest time, and last year I was in Kentucky where they are all UK fans so they kept me posted, even though UK wasn’t even in the tourney, and now they are in the final 4... Crazy!

With the glasses, I’ll need new frames, or just get contacts.  The frames I have are kind of junk. I only have one arm and that one fell off and the rims are kind of bent! So I’ll look into contacts probably! And how long did you all say i would need braces for the surgery? Keep me posted on school, and BSU is still sounding good, but we will see what you find out!

OH! We found out what the bites were coming from They weren’t hives -- stupid West Virginia doctors. The medicine didn’t do anything because it was bed bugs!!!! Those things are nasty! So we had to spray down our beds, and then bomb the room.... and then after all of that they were still alive! Those things are crazy! So we had to throw our beds and box springs away and now have to sleep on the couch for about a week until our new beds get here. I’m glad I’ve never had to experience those before, and I don’t want to ever again! You can’t kill all of them really I guess. The only way to get rid of them is to get rid of your bed!

That’s about all I have now let me know about the JoD and what you can do!

Love you all!

Elder Latimer

P.S
Have you been able to get the Richard Sherman Jersey signed?

Thanks!!!

April 7, 2014

Hi [Everyone]!

Things here are good, not much else to report other than we did get to see every session of conference and watched the two on Sunday with Sharri, one of our investigators. She seemed to really enjoy it! I really liked Elder Holland’s talk and Elder Bednar’s.  Elder Packer had a pretty cool one too, although I was afraid he was going to die.
Spring here keeps struggling. It gets up in the 70's for a day or two then it drop down to the 40's and rains for a couple days, then back up, then back down. It is supposed to be in the 40's and 50's with rain until the end of the week, and then it begins to warm up again. I can’t wait for the green because it’s kind of ugly here when everything is dead. Unlike Washington where it’s always green. It’s not as bad as Utah though.

Anyway Elder Morgan and I are getting along well. It’s nice to have someone who knows how to talk to people and the doctrine! So we try to keep busy although this week has been slow. We have had a ton of appointments set up and then they all fell through. We only taught like 2 or 3 times this week and 2 of those were Sharri. Sad to say we got new beds and everything. And we both got bites last night! We bombed the room 3 times and sprayed it down and they still are around! They are insane. I don’t know what they want us to do. I
mean we just moved into this place like 4 weeks ago!

How should I go about getting glasses or contacts? Should I set up an appointment and then e-mail you all so I can get the money part ready before I go in? I’m excited to be able to see again! Thank you for getting the Journal of Discourses! Starting from the beginning would be perfect!

About pictures, I’m sad to say I don’t know where the card with the pictures on it went! I’ve been searching for it for a week or so now! It had a bunch of pictures with families and the pirates! I’ll keep looking, and I forgot to send the pirate CD in the package! I’ll have to send it another time.

I did get all the e-mail's about SVU and I’ll keep thinking about it.  My companion told me (and you all told me) there are less people there than there were at LHS. I don’t know how I feel about that. Seems like it would be kind of boring, but I’ll keep thinking!

Thanks for getting my watch fixed! That will be nice! I don’t have another watch to wear as of now, and I was thinking about buying a cheap little one but I can’t really afford it with the mission money. I need to eat!

And I didn’t know UK and UConn are playing (in the NCAA championship)! That’s crazy! It’s too bad I can’t watch. That’s ok, next year I will!

Not too much has happened this week, except we did knock on a door and a Mexican guy came to the door and yelled "AMIGOS!" and let us right in. It wasn’t until we sat down we realized neither of the two there spoke a lick of English, so we stumbled and tried to use makeshift sign language, and the Spanish words we did know to talk to them.  We managed to set an appointment for Saturday at 5. We have a member that speaks Spanish so that will be interesting! Something I never thought I would come across in West Virginia!

Oh and is there some way we can do a 3 way Skype session with Jake too on Mother’s day? That would be pretty cool!

Love you all!

New Area; New Companion; Investigator has Baptismal Date (Snow! Snow! and More Snow!)

February 14, 2014

Hi Everyone!

Sorry, I’m late getting to you all, but we got about 14-18 inches of snow. We measured it the night it started and had a foot already! We actually played volleyball at the church, and there was already about an inch down so we would be alright. We left about an hour later and there was close to 5 inches! We made it home alright, and then got a text that we were not to drive the whole next day. It doesn’t help that we have a 2 wheel drive vehicle. Before we left the church we had some fun in the parking lot, then bishop pulled in and we thought “oh no, we are in trouble.” He pulled up and said, "Let me show y'all how it’s done" and our bishop took his truck and tore up the parking lot! He is probably one of my favorite bishops I’ve had on my mission. He is really easy going and relaxed.

Last night we went to a member’s house for a bonfire and sleigh riding (What they call sledding) and then took the tractor and made a path for us to go down, and the we hopped in the bucket of the tractor and it took us back to the top to go down again! It was a blast!

Anyway, we decided to drive today because we were getting cabin fever, so we took our 2 wheel drive out. And we made it pretty good!

Now for the news . . . . I’m getting transferred to Beckley, WV and serving with Elder T., no one knows who he is here, so it will be a surprise! When I told the members where I’m going as well as some investigators they all said something along the lines of, "Have fun. It’s an interesting place up there,” and, “stay away from nitro." From what I’ve been told Nitro, WV is similar to the place in the movie, "Wrong Turn" which was filmed in WV. Where a family takes a wrong turn and ends up trying to get away from all these crazy inbreads. So I’m excited to go to Nitro and take some picture for you all :)

Beckley is a bigger city from what I’ve been told. They have a mall and a Dick’s sporting goods there! It’s gonna be the biggest place I’ve been my whole mission!

Anyway not much else has happened but I’m excited to be transferred, even though it will be on Saturday instead of Thursday because of the storm!

I’ll be spending the majority of today digging peoples drive ways!

Love you all!

Hi Everyone!
So Beckley, WV is nice. It’s a much bigger place than I’ve served in before! Although it is still West Virginia. The roads are very small, windy, and in bad shape and go every which way. and the people are interesting as well. It hit me I wasn’t in Virginia (the promise land) anymore when we visited a guy who lives in a tiny trailer that is falling apart, has a 70 inch flat screen tv and lives with his 70 year old aunt with dementia -- and not to mention that neither have any teeth!  Anyway I’ll have to get readjusted to being in West Virginia again!
My companion is Elder T. He is from all over. They moved a lot while he was growing up. He last lived in Vancouver, WA. So it’s nice to not have a Utah companion, although this transfer will probably be my toughest yet. He is a nice kid and all, but really awkward... like a lot, and he just finished training so I’m having to get used to all the kind of corny (but good?) phrases all missionaries like to use when they first come out. That, and he likes to try and read chapters with investigators that they don’t need. He just likes to try and make some deep out-in-left-field connection.  Last time we read Mormon 9, and then invited them to church. Needless to say we haven’t heard from that person since. But I’m hoping i will learn something this transfer... maybe patience?
It is nice that we have 3 sets of missionaries in our ward. We share the area with the sisters who are pretty cool, and another set of missionaries in a place called Oak Hill. They are pretty fun guys, so that should help.
The ward seems pretty cool. They are actually smaller than in Pembroke. I think I will grow to like them. They seem like fun people. But it might be hard for them to match the Pembroke ward. We will see!

We are getting hit with snow pretty good! Like I said before, I think, last Wednesday-Thursday we got 18 inches of snow! And so we didn’t do much work cause we had a little 2 wheel drive Chevy Malibu. I’m pretty excited now cause we have a truck in this area! I’ve been waiting for one my whole mission! Although again Elder T. isn’t the best driver. He has only had his license since before he came out, so for less than like 4 months, and now he is driving a truck on the West Virginia roads. He has already hit a sign. I’m excited for when it’s my turn to drive!
And I will pray about the whole school thing. I’m still definitely leaning towards Boise State. I’ll pray about it, but I’m pretty sure I’ll still want to go to Boise State. I don’t think I could handle BYU-I from all I’ve heard and missionaries I’ve met. it sounds to me like i would be miserable there... but I will still pray and decide.
Love you all!

Hi Everyone!

The new area is pretty good. It seems every area I go into struggles with investigators. By that I mean the amount of them. I guess we will work on finding. Like I told you last time, my companion is still in that phase of, well I don't know how to explain it, but he just thinks too hard and to deep and makes everything confusing. The other day he made us walk up a fire escape and knock on every fire escape door because there wasn't a front door to get to where this person lived (it was a bad address that took us to a store in some building downtown). It was ridiculous. And he LOVES to tract.  His decision for everything is to tract, and recently we have been told to try and not tract because of how ineffective it is compared to seeing part-member families and less-actives and seeking referrals. Even so he thinks it is the Spirit prompting him, that's why we knocked on all the fire escape door 3 stories up on a rusted walkway. Once, we tried to visit a less active. She said she doesn't want us back, and she isn't Mormon any more and to leave her alone. So we got back in the car and he said, "The Spirit told me we need to go back and tell her about the Book of Mormon." So I did because I didn't want to be the one to cause a problem. We went back 30 seconds after she told us to never come back, and he asked her about the Book of Mormon. Then she proceeded to yell at us and tell us to leave or she will call the cops. We left then got in the car.  He sat there quiet for a minute or so and said, "Elder we need to go back again." At this point I was thinking, "Are you kidding me?!" Anyway we went back and she was on the phone with the cops, and so we left and got in the car and he says, "I don't know why people get so mad so easily!"

One thing I’ve learned in the part of the country, and everywhere I think is that people don't like to get pushed. You need to feel them out and become their friends and go the direction they need. He likes to force everything, and tell them they "need" to come to Church and they "have" to quit smoking etc... and he offends a lot of people because no one like to be told what to do -- especially by a 19 year old they have never met before. I told him that and he went off on how our purpose is to change their lives and baptize them. I just said, “whatever” and that was that. Then we went and saw a member who is a friend of people we are teaching. One of the people he practically tied to a tractor and was dragging them to the baptismal font and she said she was getting baptized in another church. The member sat him down and gave him a good rebuking. He told him he needs to "Back off, now! unless you want them to leave and never come back. You can’t push people here. This is a smoking state and you can’t tell people what they need to do. That's how you lose them." So that was nice he got it from someone other than me. Now he always reminds me of how I need to remember not to push, but to go easy so we don't scare them away.

Anyway sorry about the rant. It’s the only time I can because if I do to other missionaries they look down on you for not loving your companion...

Other than that things are going all right.  Not too much is happening. Although there is a member we see who is interesting. His name is Bro. H., and he is the guy who loves his stories. For example, he tells us:

“I can tell the weather by looking at the stars and the moon”

“I can curl 450 easy”

“I broke those two steel axes just splitting wood, don't make me angry”

“Your fish sits in the freezer for 7 years”

“Alaska has enough water to power the United States for 3000 years”

“I’m too smart for college, I know more than people with doctorates”

“I’m the only white guy native Americans will fish with”

“I go out for an hour put down my net and pull up 8000 pounds of halibut”

“I can do anything with meat. I’m a self-taught Master Chef”

“When I drove trucks, I got permission from all the stake presidents to baptize people because they wouldn't get baptized unless I do it. I have over 200 baptisms, I know what im doing.”

He has a ton more, and I’ve only met him twice!, He is the kind of guy that is the best at everything and no one can tell him otherwise. The funny thing is he completely believes himself!

We were searching for an apartment, because where we live now has a giant floor vent for a heater that is like a grill. I’ve burnt my foot on it 3 times already. The house is run down and in the ghetto, well . . . as ghetto as West Virginia can be I guess.

The place we found we are moving into mid-March. It is two stories has two kitchens two fridges two washer and dryers! And a ping pong table! So we are pretty excited. I hope they put another set of missionaries in with us!

There is skiing in West Virginia, I don't know where but I know that there is! And I did get the pants and they do fit, Thank you!  I can’t wait for the cookies!!! I have some stuff I need to send to you all too, I just need to wait for the first of the month!

Other than all of that not too much else is going on, just trying to endure this transfer.

Oh and did you ever send back the XD card for the camera? if you did I must have lost it and need to buy a new one so I can send the one I have home to you. Let me know so I know if I should buy one.

My backpack broke, so I’m going to have to look for a new one!

That's about all!

Love

P.S Have you shipped any protein? Love you!

And I would like to share a text conversation we had with the sister missionaries with you... we are terrible!

Sisters: Do you have Jeffs number, and could you give it to us?

Us: Ok, well we do know a guy who knows a guy, whos dogs first owners brothers wifes cousins roomates dads second cousins sons-in-laws fostered half brothers mothers  cats vets former foreign exchange students nemesis sisters boyfriends trainers AA sponsors favorite movie stars PR lawyers doctors mechanic could probably help ya out.
And the previously mentioned mechanics number is .....

Sisters: Was it the foster sons biological or foster mothers?

Us: Unknown the babies were switched at birth... Welcome to the WVCM!

Sisters: Whose # is that?

Us: Its the mechanic I though we told you

Sisters: Well yes, whats the mechanics name?

Us: Ask the doctor.

Then from that they stopped responding!

Love you!

Hi Everyone!

Things are going good here, still trying to endure but it’s not too bad. My companion has seemed to relax a little bit so that’s nice, although all he wants to do is tract all the time! The other day it was pouring rain, and he wanted to tract.  I told him that less-actives, part member families, former investigators, and member referrals are the way to go. They have told us they are trying to eliminate tracting, but he doesn’t want to hear it. Oh well.

They haven’t told us about those new things yet [his mom shared some new approaches and initiatives in missionary work that she learned about recently]. We do have specialized training this transfer so maybe we will learn it there! I will be sending the package of stuff this week, just have to get back the pirate CD from the investigator in my last area from another set of elders!

The other day we went out with a family who is moving for lunch, and my companion and I did the blazin’ challenge at Buffalo Wild wings. That’s eating 12 blazin’ wings in 6 minutes. We both did it, and my mouth burnt so bad. The worst part was all around my face where the sauce went.  It felt like I was holding my face against a furnace! Or, if you got like a second degree burn from under your nose to your chin and all around there then smacked it – that’s what it felt like for a good hour or two! I have pictures on the card I will be sending home! The hardest part was how fast you had to eat them. Not only were they so spicy they made you cry (and eat boogers cause your nose runs and you don’t have time to wipe it), but the wings were so hot temperature-wise I burnt the top of my mouth too!

Anyway other than that not too much else is going on. We did go to a member’s to eat and taught their son’s fiancĂ©. She had told us she had been praying to know truth. We talked about the temple and just about everything, and then showed her a video with a combination of Elder Holland and President Eyring called “Missionary work and the Atonment.” it is amazing! And she loved it and plans to be baptized on the 1st of April.  She and her fiancĂ© have already begun making plans to go to the Hawaii temple after a year of membership. She said she saw the temple a few years ago and said it felt like it was just pulling her there, and she needed to go. So thats exciting! I made sure to let my companion know . . . (Members involved in the work... not tracting :)

It’s still winter here.... We got another 6-8 inches last night. I’m very ready for summer to be here because people here in the winter hibernate. If it’s cold dark or wet they stay inside and don’t want to talk to anyone, unlike the summer where everyone is in a good mood and outside having fun and when there are a lot of service opportunities! So summer will be great!

Other than that not much else is going on!

Love you all!

P.S Let me know when you ship the protein because we are moving to another house on the 15th
