Hi Mom and Dad!

Well this week has been interesting for sure! Elder Bolan, who is the next area over, was training a visa-waiter for Peru. They got a call Wednesday that he was leaving the next day.... So now we have him [Elder Bolan] sleeping on our floor and the 3 of us have to cover 2 areas with 2 cars, 2 phones, and 2 apartments. So this will definitely be interesting.

Other than that it’s the same old, same old. Nothing too exciting happened this week.  We were really just planning and trying to find out how we will work 2 areas with only 1 set of us. So we have twice as much to do in half the time.

Mexico sounds fun. I’d like to be there too, but oh well.  It has slowly started to warm up. Apparently, this time last year it was in the 80's, so its struggling to get there. I’m hoping it will stay in the 60's or so until I get my short-sleeve shirts.

With my weights and protein I’m starting to get bigger. I have an hour to work out in the morning, and then I work out again a little at night before bed. So that’s something to keep my mind busy.

Anyway, I’m still having a great time and learning a lot! I will have to listen to that talk that you guys sent me [this was a great talk on the Atonement by Elder Holland - www.lds.org/general-conference/2009/04/none-were-with-him?lang=eng]. Oh, and I thought of something I would like to get in my package but it’s too late now.... I wanted a cammo tie/sweats. "Mossy oak" would be preferred :)

Other than that not a lot has happened, just the same old, same old. Hopefully, I will have some cool stories for you guys next week!

Does Jonathan know how to use the knife I sent him? It’s spring-assisted so it you flick down the piece sticking out of the back it flies open like a switch blade. It’s pretty cool. Anyway let me know when I should expect my shirts. It’s warming up fast.

Dear [All]:

I think my 2 favorite talks [from General Conference] were Elder Holland’s and President Monson’s in priesthood session, I think it was.  Anyway, he told a story about when he was a kid and wanted to make a bonfire. It was really funny, but turned out the whole talk was on obedience. We watched every session, so the last 2 days we didn’t do anything really besides eat and wait at the church for conference

Lately, my companions are complaining because we are helping people move about twice a week, although I love it because it gets me out of these clothes and into normal ones, and then I get to do some physical activity!  This place is a dying town. All the young people are moving away because there are no jobs besides fast food. There are tons of old people who all used to work at the steel mill here that was a huge employer back in the day.

It sounds like I will be getting transferred. We had interviews with President Pitt, and he talked with me and hinted at me being transferred.  Well, he pretty much told me I am, but not 100% sure. He changes his mind on the last day all the time. Also he was hinting that I would be training...so we will see what happens. If you guys plan to send anything, it would be a good idea to send it to the mission office address just in case I get transferred before it gets here.

I did get my Easter package, Thank you! It was great seeing it didn't have much candy. I have almost eaten it all now!

The investigators are pretty much the same. Mark and his daughter are both on still date for May, and then Leah is progressing. She has wanted to come to church and raise her kids around a church and get out of the situation she is in. But other than that, it’s kinda slow.  Mainly because we have 3 of us trying to cover 2 areas, but that’s ok.

On Wednesday I had an American flag pin I was going to put on my backpack, but I had to superglue it first. To make a long story short, I super glued it onto my hand and had to go to our ward mission leader’s doctor’s office so he could get it off for me. It was on there for a good 3 hours, because we were trying to get it off without help.

I am rooting for Louisville [in the NCAA Tournament], because those kind of comeback stories are pretty sweet, and also because everyone in this area is a rediculously huge UK fan, and it gets annoying that they think their team is the best team in the country even though they didn’t make the tourney.

Hi [All]!

I will send my other [photo] card home soon and make sure to package it well! That’s crazy about nana, I’ll make sure to pray for her [Josh’s grandma had some health issues that are getting better]. What is their address so I can send a letter?

I wish I could come to Mexico, but I guess I have better things to do...

I am writing Chris [Taulbee – who is also on a mission].  I get an e-mail about every other week or so. Seems like he is having an awesome time! I can’t wait for it to be nice and sunny here, but I’m also dreading it because I guess it’s usually in the 90's with 100% or more humidity. So that sounds miserable but we will see! 

I haven’t sent my shirts back. I need to do that before it gets hot. Today they say there is probably a good chance or tornadoes in our area, so hopefully if we get them they will be close, but not too close!  It’s weird here because Saturday was 70 degrees or so, and Sunday it snowed the whole day!  Now today we have lighting storms and possible tornadoes. It just can’t decide. When it rains here, it is a lot of rain. One thing I have noticed is places like this don’t have a very good drainage system compared to back home!  There are mini lakes over roads everywhere!

My new companion is Elder Parker.  He is from Layton, Utah and really tall. He has been out about 20 months so he is about done. It’s always fun giving him a hard time about going home soon.  I try to get him as home sick as possible. (I guess missionaries call it "Trunky" but I hate that word so I don’t use it) He is cool, I guess, but he is really quiet, and we don’t really have anything in common, but we are both pretty relaxed guys so it will work out I’m sure. It just won’t be as exciting as when Elder Hudson and I served together. It helped that one of the Russell missionaries was way cool too, but they both left.

That reminds me, a lot of missionaries here say doing certain things are "Apostate." That’s my least favorite thing they say. I don’t think they know what it means. One missionary told me he was “apostate” because he visited espn.com. And another told me that going to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings was "Apostate" because the music and T.V's. in the restaurant. I call them out every time because I believe being apostate is "forsaking your religion, or God" or along those lines. I don’t think going out to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings is forsaking our religion and everything we believe.... Anyway, missionaries use a lot of stupid sayings that just make me mad. One of which is if a missionary is training, he calls his trainee is his "son" and their previous companion is "mom" and there are uncles, grandpas etc... which is just stupid, I think.  Also,if a missionary is going home he is dying or if he went home, he died. I think that’s stupid too. Anyway that’s my rant.

We are still teaching the same people and trying to get them to stop smoking/chewing and those things. Nothing too exciting to report about that.

But we did see Elders Oaks, Holstrom, Lancing, and Bishop Cossay? (Not sure how to spell it. He is french so it probably has a lot of unnecessary letters in it.)  It was awesome.  We got to shake all of their hands. I honestly can’t remember everything they talked about, but I did take notes.  I do remember that was the fastest 3 hours ever. Anyway, it was a cool experience.

I am also really enjoying the weights i have been using them every morning and night. It’s just something to kind of help keep my mind off things for a little bit so I can relax, but after 2 weeks I can tell I’m still slowly getting bigger, which is fun to see.

Elder Parker is a cool guy.  He is a little more reserved than I would like but that’s ok, I can deal with it. We do have 2 new investigators. We finally met with Mark and his daughter, and they are both on date to be baptized in May! Hopefully he will decide to move it up so I will be here for sure. I may stay another transfer, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I left. I would like to stay, but we will see.

Our investigator, Leah, is making progress on her own. We were over talking to her, and she expressed her desires to start going to church and surrounding herself with good people. This is mainly because she has had a tough life.  She is 27 and has 4 kids.  One sister just got out of jail and she and her three kids are now living with her and the sister has started using dope again. Her other sister is in jail for another 8 years and their boyfriends and stuff are always around. She has just about quit smoking and wants us to teach her more about prophets and apostles. So she is moving a long quickly.

And did Jake like Mein Kampf? I've always wanted to read it. Too bad I can’t on my mission. Oh well.

Everyone here is talking about March madness! I can’t believe the teams that are in the sweet 16! I would love to watch them play. One of my favorite things is watching guys on teams like that who do well and who put their life on hold almost to play ball and then have it pay off. They look like they are 8 again. It’s pretty cool seeing how happy they get for winning a game!

I did get the picture of the quilt. I’ll probably do that [with my ties]!  For my package there isn’t anything that I really need -- just food and things like that.

Pres. Pitt told us we can now e-mail friends back home! So if you could post my e-mail on my twitter and facebook accounts that would be awesome!  It makees everything a lot faster and cheaper!

One cool thing I learned, but I guess I already knew, was that we were having a terrible week the last week or two. I thought to myself, “the Lord will give us trials, and if we keep our faith and continue to work hard good things will come.” So I saw we were having a bad 2 weeks and kept thinking, “if we just continue to work and do all that we can do we will be blessed for our efforts.” Just this past weekend, we were able to meet with Mark and set him and his daughter on [a baptismal] date.  We also found out a new family in the ward has a daughter who has not been baptized yet (she is 17), and Leah is working forward fast!  Also we gave a former investigator a call and his mom was on her death bed but after she passes he wants us to come a teach him. He sounded really sincere. Also, Mark has a friend with a less active family we have been working with since I got here, and who have not been coming to church. But mark invited them to church with him this week! So we should have at least 3 investigators at church along with 2 less active families who are coming! Since we worked as hard as we could those 2 weeks we have received a ton of blessings! 

I will have to send you my notes from Elder Oaks because I honestly don’t remember what he said for sure, unless I read my own notes. So I can make a copy and send it to you.

I wasn’t sure who to send my shirts too, so i sent them back to home along with my picture card and Jonathan’s present. They said it should be there Thursday. So I hope it doesn’t get too warm for the next couple weeks until I get those back the right size. I forgot to check what size I need. I believe 2 sizes smaller, or 1 and a half.

That’s about all i have to tell you now, I guess.

Staying Ashland with New Companion and a Baptism!

Hello Everyone:

I’m staying in Ashland for at least one more transfer, we will see if I stay for a while. I found out I’m now serving with Elder Parker. All I know about him is that he is tall. Anyway I’m excited to stay here because there are a lot of cool families we visit, and it’s nice to continue to get to know them. Also it’s nice to be in the same ward with other missionaries, so on p-day and throughout the week we can hang out. It’s slowly starting to be spring here. It was 76 degrees just a few days ago! But it actually snowed today. It is supposed to be in the 60's the rest the week, which feels about 70 or so here. I haven't sent those shirts [short-sleeved] back yet as I haven’t had time, but I will in the next few days, along with Jonathan’s [birthday] present.

I got my weights and have been working out like I had been back home -- every day for an hour. I have also been using my protein shake and creatine, so hopefully I start to see results soon! It’s been kind of tough though because that first week is always brutal.  Every set of muscles is sore for the next few days.

I haven’t got the bishops package yet, but I’ll keep waiting on it.

That sucks that nana got shingles, we had a kid on out lacrosse team that had them, and it doesn’t look fun at all! [Note:  Elder Latimer’s grandma had a case of shingles when she was traveling in South America as a water specialist for the Church – eds.]

And it’s cool Ryan [cousin] is going to Loyola [law school]. They have a great D-1 lacrosse team there! They won the national championship in 2010, I believe. You have to tell him to go watch one sometime!

Bill and family are doing well. He is moving slow but still progressing.  It will take a while with him, but he enjoys having us come talk to him. He told us a story about how his old preacher from his previous church visited him and apologized that they hadn’t seen him or checked on him. He told him "well, 2 Mormon boys visit me every week."  The preacher then said, “Well, we will have to see you some more.” Bill also told him about another member of their church that had been struggling for food and the pastor hadn’t done anything about it, and then told him that the same 2 Mormon boys had brought some for him. The pastor then said, "Oh, well I’ll be right on that!" It’s fun to one up guys who get paid to do these things.

The baptism went well. I’ll have to send you pictures because we did the baptism in Olive Hill, KY, which is tiny! Their chapel is like our home ward relief society room, and that’s really it. That branch only has 20 members in it, so it’s good for them to get another, and the Olive Hill missionaries got 2 new investigators out of it!

Also, I've heard North Korea is going crazy again and scrapped their treaty with South Korea and vowed to nuke us? Well that’s exciting. We might have another Hiroshima and Nagasaki on our hands? Even China is fed up with them too? Crazy.

We found out we can’t play basketball up with the ZL's anymore because they had an investigator dunk and shatter the back board. Just like Shaq. The stake presidency is really mad, especially because an apostle is coming this week. [Elder Oaks is visiting the mission on the 16^th – eds.]

President Pitt sent us an e-mail and told us out mission is not being split and no missionaries are leaving, so thats good to know!

A member told me the Seahawks got Percy Harvin from the Vikings? I hope so! They also said they predict the 49ers or the Seahawks to win the Superbowl. So those games this season should be crazy. I’m kind of mad I have to miss them. Oh well!

Hi [All]!

About the weights, Pres. Pitt encourages us to have a set in the apartment, and my bags roll so I can do it [move them around the mission]. That way they won’t take up too much room, and I can squat enough to lift that bags into the car easy anyways.  The good news is that I visited a doctor in the ward about my [possible] hernia. He checked and says I probably don’t have one, but to keep in touch with him about if the pain keeps up.  He says I am good to lift things, but to stop if I feel any pain. 

Last week we helped 2 people move and helped haul a tree that was cut up with a chain saw over to a member’s house then split them so that’s good that I am getting a work out those ways too!  Oh, before I forget, there is a non-member family that feeds us all the time. There was some painting she wanted me to ask you guys to look for.  Please keep an eye out for a painting made with crushed buttons.  She has to remind me what it is of but I can tell you that later, because her grandma painted/made it and it was taken by one of their preachers and they haven’t seen it since. [Note sure why Josh thought we would see the painting in Seattle, but we’ll do our best! – eds.]

I’m jealous that Jonathan is starting to play lacrosse at a young age.  I wish I would have!  My friend sent me a letter from Boise telling me about a special on TV about our [Boise State] lacrosse team. I don’t remember specifics, but it was a boy with a bucket list, and his dad was dying from some kind of cancer. I think and could barely walk.  The one thing he wanted to do was play college lacrosse for his dad, so he came and practiced with the team! 

Anyway, that’s cool Jake is getting his papers in! That would be cool to learn a language, I just know I never could, and wouldn’t ever have the urge to do it. I think he will go somewhere in Asia.

Tell Bishop Eden, I'll try to slow down on baptisms, but i can’t promise anything! [Our home ward Bishop jokingly said that he was frustrated that Josh has will have two baptisms and our ward hasn’t had any in a little while.  We relayed that fun message to Josh. – eds.]

Today we are going to Hunnington, West Virginia to play basketball with the Zone leaders and some other missionaries. It’s one of the only full-sized courts in the mission. I’m excited to play a full court game that’s actually competitive!  

I’m not sure if I told you about Bill recently he is making some progress. He has been reading the Book of Mormon a lot finally, and he tells us he "Loves It!"  He is confused on why people bash on the Mormons. He said, “you guys believe everything Christians do.”  It also blew his mind when we told him we used the King James version of the Bible too. So hopefully we can help him stop smoking next, and his family seemed interested too!

It kills me coming here right after I bought my rifle because there are deer everywhere! There is a group of 4 of them that just walk our around our apartment. It’s fun talking to people about guns because they go into rants about how Obama is terrible and is the “anti-Christ” and how the South will rebel again. Anyways they go crazy about it, and it’s always fun to listen.

My Canadian companion is a great guy, but all he does is talk about how Canada is better than the U.S. I’m not the type of person who will call people out and argue, so I just keep to myself the best I can. But the other day he brought up with an investigator his favorite thing to brag about –  universal health care –  and it made me so happy that that investigator completely went off on him, and blew holes in all his arguments. My favorite was when he said, "How is your health care system so great when you have lines for surgeries and MRI's, Transplants  etc... out the door and have so many people die because of it!" You should have seen the look on his face. Then he likes to talk about how Canada has a higher than the United States, and how Canada's economy and political system is so much better than the United States. Then the investigator told him, "Where would Canada be if the United States didn’t have their backs? What would happen if the U.S said, “hey, we don’t care anymore, whoever wants Canada go for it, we aren’t stopping you." I enjoyed that point. AnywaysI have started to dislike Canada more and more as this goes on. Anyway, I enjoy having him put in his place.... Don’t get me wrong I love the guy! Just not Canada....

Dear [All]:

That’s cool Jake’s [mission] papers are in! I wonder where he will go?  Wouldn't it be crazy if he came here, and we served together?  That would be a cool story!  And that’s good that Jonathan is enjoying lacrosse.  I sure know I miss it! I have a good idea of what I can send to Jonathan [for his birthday]!  They have a sweet flea market here with some [deleted to preserve the surprise – eds.].   So I might buy one and ship it.  It may be a little bit late though because it’s only open on Thursday-Sunday.  When is Joe's birthday again? I know he would love a [deleted].  They are pretty cheap which is nice.  It might cost more to ship than to buy it! I did get myself a pretty cool switchblade the other day though.  You never know what might happen with theses crazy Hillbillies!

Yes, we have still have the baptism on the 9th, and it seems like he [Jake] is really excited! We had to really teach simple because he didn’t even know what the Atonement was, but so far he believes everything and is taking it well and keeping commitments.  With Bill and his family the biggest thing we will have to work with him on is quitting smoking and coming to church. Other than that we are still visiting with the McClanahan family, who are non-members, but love to feed is and have us over. They aren’t really progressing, but we enjoy visiting with them, and they love when we come visit them --so it’s still beneficial.

Last night we went to a member’s house to watch 17 miracles and the CES Devotional. Both were awesome! I kind of thought Elder Bednar’s talk was kind of a slam on the Pope.  I thought that was pretty funny.

And I’ll be sure to send those shirts back as soon as I can [some shirts we sent that were too big – eds.], and can’t wait for my weights! We hardly have enough time to work out as it is, and push-ups and sit-ups won’t do, especially since we have a car.  We sit for an hour, walk to the car, drive to another appointment, walk inside, and sit for another hour. So we get no exercise.  I hope my next area is a bike area.

Transfers are on the 14^th, and it’s a toss-up on whether I will stay in Ashland or leave. I hope I stay because I’m just getting to know the people, and it’s nice having another set of missionaries in the same ward that we can hang out with every once in a while.

After transfers on the 16^th, we have a meeting where they are getting the whole mission together, which never happens.  We are having a conference with Elder Oaks, Elder Holstrom from the Seventy and a member of the presiding bishopric. We are pretty sure they are going to be splitting our mission because it’s so big, and then re-open the Cincinnati mission.  The new Cincinnati mission will cover where I am at now, but that change won’t happen until July.  I hope I don’t get moved into the Cincinnati mission because they will almost be like being back home – up north in a big city. It would be nice to stay in the West Virginia area!

By the way, my stomach isn’t in pain anymore, I don’t know what must have happened but good thing I don’t need to go get surgery!

Sadly, today's P-day is going to suck because my companion really wants to visit an area near us where he served and visit people all day! So instead of playing basketball, I get to dress up in church clothes and sit around all day. I'll be complaining the whole time just so he knows how much of a waste today will be. J

Another Baptismal Date!

Hi [Everyone]!

In the service of the Lord.

I miss being home too, but I’m having a good time out here. [This is in response to his parents telling him how much we miss and love him – eds.]

Teaching is going well. We started teaching a kid named Jacob. He is 17 and is set to be baptized on the 9th!  So that’s been going well.  We’ve been meeting with him a lot to get him ready.  We got Bill [an investigator they have been teaching] reading the Book of Mormon, and it surprised him how similar it is with the Bible. So when we visited today he talked about how much he loved it, and how he had read 6 chapters in less than an hour! Also his sister and wife finally sat in on a lesson, so hopefully he will continue to progress.  We are going to start to teaching another person who is in prison, so that will be a neat experience.

That’s crazy William [Josh’s friend who served a mission in Brazil] is already home!  But that’s too bad he came back to Utah.  I could never live there.

And would you be able to send me that book so I can read it? [Dad had shared with him some thoughts from a book entitled “Act in Doctrine” by Elder David A. Bednar –eds.]

And some bad news. . . . We helped someone move for about 5 hours and they just watched.  Anyway, another Elder here has had 2 hernias, and I asked him some questions, and he says he thinks I may have one.  Also a doctor in the ward, who has not examined me yet, but who I told what happened and some of what is going on, said he thinks I may have one too.  But I’m going to go for another month or so and see if it gets better before I get it checked. 

In those pictures that I sent you make sure you let everyone know I made sure to have the American flag higher than the Canadian one!

Other than that I’m doing well, and trying to keep busy. I’m going to visit with a member who has over 50 sniper rifles, collects AK-47's and has plenty or AR-15's m-16's and all sorts of other guns, so that will be a fun meeting. I’ll be sure to get pictures!

1st Transfer Day - but staying put!

Note:  We missed posting last week, so this week's installment features two letters from Elder Latimer.  Enjoy! - eds.

February 6, 2013 Letter

Hi All!

I will be with my companion for at least 2 transfers because of training.  If you are ever not sure whether I’m still in the same place, you can always send letters and mail to the mission home, and they forward all the mail/packages to where we are.  The address for the mission home is 888 Oakwood Road, Charleston, WV. I’m sure you can find it online too just in case I’m wrong.

And I did get the shirts. [short-sleeve white shirts we sent to him – eds.] They are a little big. The sleeves go past my elbow.  I'm not sure how to exchange them, but if you e-mail me with the process, I can check my e-mail just to see what you said.

We will be getting around 18 new missionaries tomorrow and then we are supposed to get another 30 or so next transfer, so the mission has opened up a lot of new areas. Most wards will have 2 sets of missionaries.  The one I am in now has me and my companion and then a trio-companionship also -- so 5 Elders in 1 ward!

One idea for the chili cook-off [Mom is planning this activity for our home ward – eds.] is something here that they always do.  Just make peanut butter sandwiches, just white bread and peanut butter and dip those in the chili. Oddly enough, its really good.

And yes, I do know about the Superbowl.  Thank goodness!  I’m happy Ray Lewis got his ring to end his 17 year career. From what I hear and speeches he has given he seems like a pretty humble guy who plays the game for the game and not the money like most.  You should look up some of his speeches. He goes around and does a lot of motivational speeches, and they are really good.  I’m going to miss watching him play.  He is probably the best linebacker to play the game right next to Dick Butkus who played for Chicago.

Nothing too exciting is happening besides Bill and his family who are coming to church this weekend. One cool story from the Elders in the area next to us (who share the ward) is they met a lady who referred herself to the missionaries on accident, and they started to teach her. At the time there were only two Elders in the companionship. She told them how when she was little she talked to these 3 lights and called them her elders, and now she only sees one light.  When the 3rd elder came to their companionship she told him she had seen him before.  Then when they told her about Lehi's dream [from the Book of Mormon], she said it was weird because she would take in kids and teach them about this dream she had that was identical to Lehi's, including a rope in a mist of darkness you need to hold onto so you don’t get lost.  One day they were going to teach her about the plan of salvation, and before they even said anything about what they were going to teach, she interrupted them and said, I had a dream last night about the afterlife. She said she saw a diagram and explained it to them.   It was the exact same thing as the plan of salvation.  She went in depth too and it was all the same. It blew their minds. They said for every lesson they go to teach she had been prepared the night before.... crazy, but really cool. So now her and her daughter are set to be baptized later this month.

And with the tax returns when will i get the money? so i know when i can buy some weights of my own to use.

Oh that reminds me, we aren’t allowed to use a normal gym, but I have been told President Pitt loves college athletes who gave up playing for 2 years for a mission, and is likely to give me special permission to use a gym in the mornings and p-days.  It makes sense to me now one reason he likes me so much.  When I told him I played lacrosse at Boise State, he seemed to light up and always talks to me about it. My companion told me back in the day he [President Pitt] played college football so he knows the sacrifice and is willing to make a few exceptions to help out.   For example, I don’t know how it works to get permission to send an elder home a couple months early (honorably) but he was able to get it approved so that one Elder here can go home a few months early so that he can make spring camp/practice for the Ute's football team to retain his scholarship.

February 11, 2013 Letter

Hi All!

Bill is doing well. He is really open to everything and when we teach him it all makes sense to him. He is also very excited about attending church and deciding whether he should bring his family, so that should be good!   They just opened up a new area, so we had to spend the day helping the new missionaries move in, so after 6 hours of shopping and setting up we finally got home and could rest. But we were blessed for it. A couple days later they called us with a referral of someone who attended their branch with his aunt and uncle but he lives in Ashland is excited to hear more! In 3 weeks Bill is going on the road with a buddy who is a trucker for a month to get a chance to travel. But that will be good for him, he is so busy that he doesn’t have time to sit down and read the Book of Mormon, but being in a truck for a month will give him plenty of quiet time to read.

And Alexis [a former investigator that was baptized about 6 weeks ago – eds.] is doing better, I think, We finally were able to get help from members and now she is in St. George, UT staying with a family and going to school there. So I think she is doing a lot better!

Our weather has been pretty good. On and off last couple of weeks we got like 2-3 inches of snow, but it would melt in a day or two. Then we would get some more. But it has generally been in the 50's, which is normal and nice, especially in the humidity. One day in January it got to 78 degrees! I have a picture on my camera so you guys can see it. And would you guys be able to post all my mission photo's to my facebook too?

And one thing, I need is some money on my home card. My bag broke and so I bought a new backpack and am running low.  I use all my support card money on groceries at the beginning of the month so I don’t have to waste time on p-day shopping. I can’t think of any more cool miracles or anything. But I did finally get my letters from Rhiannon, so that’s nice. I was able to actually write someone a letter.

One family we love is less active but they are way awesome! It’s the “L”s [keeping last name confidential for public posting – eds].  The dad served in the Marines and his wife in the Navy, so they are always poking fun at each other.  They have a 2 year old daughter, Genesis, and a 14 year old boy, Hunter, who is kind of a quiet. more awkward kid.  They always say Genesis is the Anti-Christ. They think it’s because they never get to give her a baby blessing. (The reason they are less active is because they got offended because the old bishop wouldn’t allow him to do the blessing, and he wouldn’t allow the sacrament to be passed in the foyer, and with Genesis they would need to be in the foyer the whole time.) Anyway it’s funny too because when we ask for a high five she freaks out, and when we ask to pray before we leave she screams, "No, no, no, no!!" covers her ears and runs away. Then she uses Hunter as her play toy. The parents make sure he does what she wants so she doesn’t go crazy. Sometimes she will run out of a room crying and Bro. L says, "Hunter, why is she crying!?" and Hunter says, "I wouldn’t let her fart on me!" Then Sister L. tells Hunter to let her.  Bro. L. asks, “What if she poops?”, and Sister L. goes, "Most the time she does, she just pushes till something comes out." 

Once we asked Bro. L. how much respect the Marines have for the SEAL's, because they both always poke fun at other branches of the military. He says "Yeah, we have a lot of respect for them. It’s the closest you can get to becoming a Marine."

Progress in the Work,"Y'all"

Dear Everyone,

I'm doing well, and we are making a lot more progress with our investigator, Bill.  I can never remember what I told y'all in the last email, but we met Bill, and he has been just talking with his about what he believes and what we believe. We told him a little about Joseph Smith and the movie "Prophet of the Restoration." He said he loved religious history and would like to watch it.  Anyway, we watched it with him, and he was glued to the screen. After we spent 2 hours talking and answering his questions, we invited him to be baptized.  His answer was perfect. He said, "I'm not sure, but I will read the Book of Mormon, and I can't wait to pray to know if it is true or not."  It is awesome because he is not just getting baptized because he likes the idea. He wants to get that knowledge and know for himself. People like that are those who stay in the church, as opposed to those who just join because they like the people or the idea.

Anyway, feed the sister missionaries for me!  Because I know I get enough meals from members, but I would  like more. Meals are one of missionaries favorite things.  I'm sure dad can attest to that.  By the way, I know of of the Elders I was close to in the MTC  is in Bellingham right now. I don't know where the others are.

I wasn't too sad I missed the Pro Bowl. I never watch it anyway.  It's not fun to watch because it's not competitive.  We had an investigator inviting us to watch the Superbowl at their place next Sunday.  We said we might be able to, but only if we can teach people there a lesson after . . . . so we can use it as a finding/teaching opportunity.

It's funny here that people call these mountains. The hills in downtown Seattle are just about what these are....  There is just a lot of them so you are constantly going up or down a hill. Oh, and by the way, don't tell some one from West Virginia that they are from "western Virginia," because they get pretty offended. It's kinda funny actually.

And I haven't got her letter yet [a friend who wrote -- eds.]! I've been waiting. I hope it didn't get lost, maybe she put the wrong address? Tell her to send another if I don't get one this week because I just thought she was busy with school and didn't find time to write one yet. Anyway I have never seen one of Anthony's [hockey] games, I would like too. Hopefully when I get home he will be on a college team. Plus he promised that I get to live in his mansion when he goes to the NHL.

And  will go pick up my prescription [for migraines] today. I've been taking the migralife or whatever everyday but always wake up with a little headache everyday. I have had a couple migraines -- one so bad I about puked... but i think its the air here. I've heard it has the most polluted air in the country. That and because I can never fall asleep until midnight then have to wake up at 630 so that may contribute to it. My knee is doing well.  I've started to play a little without my brace and it is pretty strong (don't worry I use it if we start to get competitive). That's the last thing I want is to get sent home and to have a doc say I cant play lax again.

I would love for you guys to send me ties! [Josh is collecting thrift shop ties - eds.] The more the better, I have about 15 already from the thrift store. I do need my short sleeve white shirts because its getting somewhat warmer, and the humidity helps. So when its 50 its perfect T-shirt weather.
